Free motion is another somewhat hidden feature of Photosynth. We’ve documented the keys in our help section, but we haven’t gone out of our way to advertise it. If you’ve ever played Doom or a similar pc game, we use a very similar (but not exact and I’ll get into why down below) key layout.

With your left hand, use the keys w,a,s,d to move forward, left, back and right. And, Since we can go up and down unlike in Doom, we use the e and c keys, respectively, for this motion.

With your right hand use the p.l.;.’ keys to rotate up, left, down and right.

When used in combination, these keys let you move in any direction through the scene. One of the best ways to start is to hit ‘e’ once to pop up above the scene a bit, then use ; to rotate the scene down so you can see it. Then you can use your left hand to roam around above it.  If you get lost, hit ‘enter’ to center back on the currently select photo or hit 0 to go to the home photo.

This is especially effective in the larger sites of San Marco and St Peters. It lets you get more of a feel for the 3D nature of the scene and to take in what we feel is the beauty of the point clouds.

It’s also shows interesting potential in the Faigin Gallery. Click here to see where I’ve navigated overhead to see the footprint of Gary’s studio.

If you think this is cool let us know. We left the feature in the app, but didn’t expose it through the UI, because it’s just not that compelling. Don’t get me wrong, the motion itself works fine – all of the movements are consistent and move you through the space as you would expect. The problem comes into play with the data and the way we present photos. Since we don’t have any constraints in the current model, when you’re moving around freely, it’s very easy to go through photos and get lost. In fact, when we first designed the UI, we used the arrows for rotation, but in testing we found that it confused people and didn’t add to the experience. That was why we switched the arrow keys to go to a next photo in a given direction. Eventually we’d love it if you could move around freely and have photos automatically display that represent where you are looking.

Please use keys that are consistent across keyboard layouts. For example the ; and : keys are accessed using shift-, and shift-. on a Danish keyboard.

Why don't you establish a real estate company?

Thx, I will try that feature.

Why not employ the method used by Virtual Earth 3D, plug in a 360 controller and your ready to go. Would love to see that feature!!
11/23/2006 9:47:11 PM UTC
What a brilliant feature, although slightly buggy with the odd distortion effects on the current photo (although it could well be my shockingly bad SIS M760 onboard graphics on this laptop).

All in all an excellent techdemo, however I'd really like to see photos rendered according to my 'proximity' to them, for example, if I turned around, the photos would 'pop' into existence as my viewport changed (although saying that, more than one photo at a time could kill off my poor laptop!)

Keep up the good work guys!

Dan.

i think this is a great feature and you should keep it... even undocumented as an easter egg ect.

i like where this project is going

Are there any plans for an SDK for Photosynth? And what might that SDK provide?
12/3/2006 8:09:37 PM UTC
Humans search.

I really like Chris's idea of plugging in a 360 controller and controlling it via this.
12/4/2006 6:12:47 PM UTC
In anticipation of being able to process our own photo collections, do you have any tips on taking the photos (overlap, exposure, etc)?

Wow guys,

Bladerunner's Esper machine, for real!
Well, kinda...
Just found out it existed.

this could be the beginning of something great!
keep up the good work!

I would like a person from the Photosynth team or other comment on how this technology is used to provide content to an end user via a website, cell phone, or other. I have seen where people are associating this new technology with web 2.0 in several areas of the releases...so can I load from my flickr account, or provide my photos from a remote website via XML?

I am an avid user of Image Modeler and Sticher from Realviz. The Realviz technology is not as intuitive as Photosynth looks for a developer, but when I am done stitching and wrapping a model I can output to user controlled QTVR, Flash, or a 3D model format to bring into Softimage, 3DSMax, Modo, or After Effects for video/image output.

The benefits I have expereinced in this workflow is that the end user in most cases does not have to download anything to view my content. My site does a flash check at the front end, and most end users have QT, WMP, and ActiveX with current updates.

The reason I ask is that I work on a corporate network and was unable to view Photosynth at first try. I will have to wait until I get home...hmmm I wonder what you were downloading to my computer.

This is rubbish - how can you produce a web app that only runs on one os?
1/1/2007 2:19:31 AM UTC
3Dconnexion has recently released an inexpensive 3D input device called the SpaceNavigator that would be perfect for Photosynth. I've been using it with Google Earth and it makes moving around and changing viewpoints in 3d space a breeze. Once you polish the navigation UI as you described above, it would be great to have support for a device like this.

Great job. I agree with the idea of using Google earths control for it..

Amazing work. I would keep the Doom controls and include auto-viewing of photos that show what you're looking at. As long as you have other ways of exploring (as you do), people can choose how they want to move around.

I hope you're thinking of allowing users to explore multiple seamless collections in a real metaverse.

Also hope this is develops as a free, ad-supported service.

I noticed in video demos that there's a key to shall all the photos in the 3d model... is that incorporated into the web control?
7/25/2007 3:57:02 PM UTC
Great work.
Can the collection of images be collected into one 3d model?. With the hyperlinks and info rich content i see no end off applications

Using gampads / Joysticks

It will be very funny to fly with a gamepad...

I think the WASD combo is widely used thats if you have a Qwerty keyboard.

I don't know if you programmer guys have used Google SketchUp or not, but if you have you probably appreciated the awesome orbit feature that they have. To use it, a user simply clicks on the object and drags the mouse to move around it very easily. The camera motion exactly duplicates what would happen if you were in outer space and you grabbed ahold of something and went around it. Perhaps that would be neat upgrade feature if you are interested. I am a sophmore in high school and am in an AP computer science course, programming in Java, and all of my five classmates were extremely impressed with your Photosynth program, and so am I! Jesse V.

12/10/2007 5:38:08 PM UTC
Using the arrow keys for right, left, forward and backwards and using "q" and "a" for up and down would be the best.

rotating should be crossing between two buttons.

Cool. It ads to the user experience. I have noticed that there needs to be a lot of photos added to get a really good taste of what it does.

I have been immersed in creating 3D destination environments using our own prorietary processes and I have been extremely interested in the progress of PhotoSynth as a creative tool over the last few years. We have now evolved our own 3D creative process to a significant stage where we see great application in working with the Live Labs team. How do I go about making first contact with someone at Live Labs to propose a colaborative effort?
1/27/2008 12:38:07 AM UTC
When I was a young man, some 48 years ago, I found
a way to paint in clear liquid resin. The painting are small,
some are 2" in diameter but can be larger and can be any
shape. Photosynth is what I have been waiting for, to be
able to fly through these paintings.
A flight through inner space.
I have made a video of one of a 2" sphere, painting.
Can a video be used with the Photosynth program?
Is there a limit to the amount of frames. one can use?
1/29/2008 6:36:28 AM UTC
it was most thought-provoking..
2/1/2008 5:32:29 PM UTC
Mildly interesting, but on the whole I find it useless. It' much easier to just look at images than doing this pseudo 3D crap. Can you say gratuitous use of tech...

Hi,

I am Patrick from Belgium and a free lance photographer.
I really like photosynth and hope that we soon can use it in our own websites.

But i want to do an offer for you.
I want to make a lot of pictures of our castle here in our town Schoten. Sent them to you .. and maybe you can make then also a photosynth of it ???

What do you think about it, is it possible ?

I am sure that a lot of newspapers in europe then also gonna write more about it.
