As the seven-member crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour prepare for their return to Kennedy Space Center tomorrow morning. We are pleased to announce an update to our collaboration with NASA.

Prior to docking at the international space station the Space Shuttle Endeavour did a complete somersault enabling astronauts in the International Space Station to photograph the shuttle's bottom-side. The photos were then sent back to NASA for analysis.  The Space Administration has been kind enough to share those images with Microsoft Live Labs. We have taken the photos and created a “synth” so people around the world can take part in the NASA experience.

So here it is, your chance to take first-hand look at what you might see on a space-walk .

Wow!!! PhotoSynth is at the core of an idea I've been imagining for quite some time. All we now need are [Microsoft] GPS-equipped digital cameras that tag each picture with exact coordinates [and perhaps angles] in order to create a 3D virtual world composed of millions of pictures from around the world. Precisely as in Google Earth, the online community could upload their pictures to the map in the location a photo was taken. Except now, each image will be placed in its exact geographic coordinates to collectively build a 3D virtual world that will be the envy of intelligence agencies the world over!

That is freakin' sweet.

What a great use of this software. It really puts the individual photos into a realistic perspective. I hope we get to sample other collections soon!

The applications of this in archaeology and historic preservation are going to be astonishing.

Is there anyway to contact the photosynth team? I've got so many questions!

Cheers

I would like to use this technology but I need to contact a team member. This tech is awesome and I have a landing spot for it right away!

Wow that's amazing. Truely inspiring images.
10/11/2007 7:29:48 PM UTC
Awesome. The only thing that's missing is that it can only display one picture at a time, and outside of it, there's only void&dots. How about an option so that multiple pictures are shown at the same time, so that the whole screen is covered, and a greater picture is formed.

As a photographer, I find much of this technology very interesting and certainly fun. But it seems the focus on big scale stuff, such as Kennedy or various large tourist places misses out the real benefits that would increase productivity. For that, it seems worrying about smaller scale things would be more important. Things that come to mind:

1) Crime scene or motor vehicle accident investigation by merging forensic photographs.
2) Archaeology, allowing for all around site photos to be merged with photos of the excavation of artifacts as it is happening.
3) Museology: integrating hundreds of macro photographs of museum artifacts, particularly rare specimens such as biological ones.
4) Photosynth microscopy (use your imagination)

Looking at a demo of Kennedy is certainly cool. But I suspect that this technology will change how people work, not just provide entertaining stuff to do with photos taken while on vacation. And then of course there is always videosynth...

i can't install that damn program!

a lot of people work at campus or at a public PC
without administrator's privileges and they're not allow to write into the windows folder.

would it be so difficult to allow users (without privileges) to install the program in the desktop???

thank you very much for great sensibility!

In Maple Story, players will be able to create characters that will grow as they learn new skills and become stronger. There are four characters to choose from: Warriors, Bowmen, Magician, or Thief. These characters can be dressed in many different and colorful outfits. Personalizing characters is one of the goals of Maple Story. Once a character has been created, they will learn skills that will help them when they reach Victoria Island.

I really hope that this is available as a desktop application as well as an online app. It would just be useful to catalog your own pictures on your desktop so that you have an easy way to find them. I'm not just talking about this from a personal point but from a company standpoint as well. How many companies have folders and folders of pictures on their network? And how long does it take a employee to find the right one? This would speed up that process significantly.

Ohh and they should use a slider that would filter images depending on the date. Photos of objects will always be changing, why not give the user a way to select pictures taken from different time periods.

I wonder if Microsoft is reading these comments... since they haven't updated their blog since last year.

Well I hope to see a version we can use very soon with our own pictures.

Great job!

Hi all.

I'm Luca, i work as electrical system designer. I often need in my job to obtain the disposition of a already existing wiring system. My only way, at the moment, it is to make a huge quantity of photo, put it in a large directory and become crazy to connect every pic with an electrical and architectural design. If I could put my hands (arr arr) on Photosynth technology, I could organize the very very huge directory into a smart collection of explorable ambients shots. Than, I ask you Photosynth Team, to make public Photosynth. Please!!!!

Goodbye and good luck

P.S.: If possible, also for free :D

Really impressed with Photosynth, if it can be this cool at such an early stage the future looks promising. I'm sure there's thousands of applications for this, as well as the general interest/entertainment value. Keep up the good work, it's nice to see Microsoft innovating!
