In March of this year Microsoft Live Labs Architect, Blaise Aguera y Arcas spoke at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference in Monterey, CA. Blaise demonstrated Seadragon and Photosynth to an enthusiastic audience and painted a vision for how these technologies will evolve in the months and years ahead. Watch the short video above to see some of the amazing ways these technologies will change the way you interact with your images in the future, and visit the Photosynth site to try the latest collections from the team.

Amazing sh!t.
6/7/2007 8:07:27 AM UTC
Looks amazing.
But will this allways be Windows only or will the finished product work for other users as well?

I know Microsoft is not known to release their products on Linux/OSX :) But since this is a new type of software a guy can hope.

Suddenly I got it.

It was in front of my eyes all along, but it never connected!
Add SeaDragon to Surface and suddenly you have a revolution unfolding in front of your eyes.

Man! I can't wait!
This is the biggest thing since Xerox came up with the mouse !
6/11/2007 9:30:04 AM UTC
A lucid, compelling demo. Give us a shout when you want to test deploy this with some real ads in some real digital magazines!

There are a couple of recent (June 10) blog entries on this at exacteditions blog

Will this eventually be a consumer technology? In other words should I start taking many snaps of places I see now, in anticipation of being able to make montages of this type?

I came across this vid by chance, and just... bloody hell. Absolutely brilliant. For once someone says they have something that will revolutionize how we look at things, and show that it's 110% capable of doing just that. In my young career in marketing and web design, I can not wait for Photosynth to hit mainstream.

Bravo. True innovation.
6/12/2007 11:24:51 PM UTC
A brilliant demo. I cannot remember when I've got this excited by a new app. This looks to be the next killer app. And well done to Blaise Aguera y Arcas for such a compelling demonstration. It's good to know there are visionaries still working in the field.
6/12/2007 11:26:32 PM UTC
Sorry I meant to add- Blaise if you are ever in Ireland I would like to buy you a beer.
6/13/2007 2:42:23 PM UTC
Beautiful stuff!
I wonder if there is a way to suggest a new location to demonstrate photosynth on? Would be a cool people pleaser. My first suggestion: try it out on a large set of satellite imagery of the Earth and see how that turns out!

Thanks for projects such as these that restore our faith in the internet revolution. One can think of a million uses for this software; in architectural restoration, in mapping of cities, in publishing, etc.
But personally I can hardly wait to use it for art projects, do you have a timeline for at least a beta release?
6/15/2007 5:37:56 PM UTC
Absolutely mindblowing. Good luck!
6/15/2007 5:38:16 PM UTC
I think this software will change how people explore and document places and sites. What I really like about it is that one can not only display small sites but huge places - making it perfect for everyones needs.

I just blogged to the readers of the ChemSpider blog about this work. I am not easy to impress...this grabbed me.

So, I got to thinking...if a camera had a GPS then every image could be written to disk with the coordinates from the GPS...they would likely be absolute in terms of where the person was standing when the photo was taken...direction etc. So, you would have the image, the time the photo was taken, the GPS coordinates and the direction the photo was taken (based on the GPS sensor). Is this how you are knitting images together..is GPS used at all. If not, wouldn't it be ideal for knitting together your montages? You would be able to take photos and based on dates be able to age the montage...imagine a picture of a mountainside and have the leaves turn, fall and regrow etc. In terms of knitting the images together it just seems right...
6/27/2007 8:24:25 PM UTC
I thought this was an awesome demonstration. Is there an estimated date of public release? I want to play with my own photos NOW! (stamps spoiled foot) Seriously though, great work, and I would like to know if it's going to be months or years or what until we can use it.

Tremendous & awesome! x 2

Right after I've seen the presentation, I've downloaded the Firefox (!!!!) plugin and gave it a try - not only it worked SMOOTH - it totally rocked!!

Tremendous & awesome! x 2

Blaise Aguera y Arcas or any other team member - if you ever consider visiting Ukraine - I promise you, I'll show you what's "noted Ukrainian hospitality" is!

Tonnes & tonnes of respect & admiration for your achievement!

Keep it up!!

a microsoft demonstration done using firefox?

nothing more needs to be said.

it made me happy anyway.
7/13/2007 3:52:58 AM UTC
What is the current plan for release/availability/distribution of SeaDragon? Will it only be available online with a Photosynth frontend or will it eventually be downloadable?

Any any details surrounding this would be helpful.
Thanks.
7/15/2007 8:58:45 PM UTC
WOW! Hats off you to folks! Truly amazing!

It appears that the way images are manipulated in Photosynth blurs the boundary between the image types of "bitmap" and "vector" so much so that it should have its own name - "vectmap" anyone?

I think this 'vectmapping' is way beyond cool, its FROZEN! :D

(When this stuff is combined with Facebook who knows what will happen!)

Hi,
My name is Adnan and i am from Pakistan. Well i am currently studying at Dalian Medical University, dalian city , P.R China. Well this university had a huge architrecture consists of 72 buildings and stuff. Its on the sea shore. And i have immense picture data in high resolution for the whole campus. I think i would love if you bring that impressive and mindblowing experiance to this Microsoft Photosynth. I am really impressed by the work of the Team , and the researchers at University of Washinton.
If you could say i can load all images for you guyz at Microsoft.

Best Regards
Dr. Adnan

Just watched the talk on TED and downloaded the demo. The work is an inspiration.

I recently read "Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson - a fantastic journey through the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. One of the books many powerful images is how awestruck the attendees were - to enter the grounds and see "The White City" for the first time.

It got me thinking what an interesting subject the fair would make for a photosynth collection. To add life and multi-dimensionality to a place and an experience that no longer exists physically but that had such a powerful impact on those that were there. Also the opportunities for interesting tagging to images of an event that literally changed the course of technological history seem endless.

Maybe I’m just drawn to the symmetry of using such a new image technology to manipulate these beautiful old images, many created by the new “Eastman Co. No. 4 Kodak” camera.

Not sure if there are enough multi angle images to work with…but see http://www.archive.org/details/glimpsesofworlds00lair for a nice start.
9/9/2007 7:42:41 PM UTC
I am impressed. I’m sure you’re aware that you have entered into the domain of the geospatial community and have designed an application that has the potential to revolutionize the utility of ubiquitous raster data. The point cloud that is generated by the image analysis has many possibilities should it be applied to geographic data and systems. I would imagine that a seed point would have to be originated by the application in which the other pixels are related to by which their position is appropriately placed in space in a cascading manner. Think of the possibilities should that point of origin be given a three dimensional cartographic value; an organic digital scale model of the earth might ensue. What a wonderful algorithm, it seems you’ve unleashed the power of leveraging the correlation of the pixels radiometric values in a spatial context. While the application gracefully relates images to each other, imagine if you relate them to the physical world. I encourage you to share your accomplishment with the geospatial community. Well done.

Wow, this technology is truly amazing. Its neat to see how they can view buildings in "3d" in this video even though they are really only 2d pictures. Also, the depth and size of those images in the gallery view is truly something. This is very exciting and innovative technology.

Cheers

Thank you for your work. This is a fantastic article.
2/19/2008 8:46:35 AM UTC
I remember a talk given by Henry Fuchs, a Computer Graphics professor at UNC, when image based 3D rendering was first hitting the scene in the mid 90s. Someone asked him about the future of rendering and he said that in ten years we'd be dealing with just points and images -- quite a statement to the polygon based culture of the time. Looks like he's only off by a factor of two.
2/21/2008 2:03:03 PM UTC
Good vision for these technologies future ! What is the result today?
2/28/2008 1:59:14 PM UTC
Really interesting. Thanks for the article.
3/1/2008 9:25:35 PM UTC
Microsoft is really on the forefront when it comes to this type of technology. Photosynth has some really amazing features that no other company or technology has been able to duplicate. The best part is how they can take a combination of 2d pictures and map them together to get a 3d picture like they did in this video. Awesome stuff to say the least!
3/2/2008 8:14:56 AM UTC
I haven't had a chance to checkout the SeaDragon technology yet, but I have to admit that this Photosynth video is amazing. Not a big fan of Microsoft, but I still have to give two thumbs up for this idea ;)
3/2/2008 11:13:11 PM UTC
I'm wondering if and when this type of technology would be available to the consumer? And, if so, how and what could it be used to do.
3/2/2008 11:44:39 PM UTC
The C Dragon technology is amazing. Is it really possible to zoom and find such minute details from a photograph taken a low resolution camera? Say from a cell phone camera?
Also if the second technology works, then flikr is going to have very serious competition from microsoft.
3/6/2008 11:43:44 AM UTC
It’s not real-time from flickr, they just acquired all of the photos from flickr. Their system had process these images to find the similarities, arrange them spatially, then they’re all subsequently compressed to the JPEG 2000 (.jp2) format for easy viewing. The enabling technology here is JPEG 2000, where very small bits of information read from the beginning of the file will provide correct color representation of the entire image. If you demand more definition, just load more of the file.
3/7/2008 10:58:48 AM UTC
good!

In The Lord of the Rings OnlineTM: Shadows of AngmarTM (LOTRO), players can customize certain elements of the game's user interface (UI), also known as "skinning." While we don't allow you to do a full-scale UI replacement, we do give you the ability to replace selected visual elements of the UI. (A full list of these elements and their sizes is provided at the end of this overview.)

This is an updated (and prettied up) version of the information that had originally been posted in their Beta forums which we had copied to our Developer Discussions - Tutorials & Other Helpful Information forum. It is a combination of the Skinning the LOTRO UI and Art Assets posts.

After playing Final Fantasy VII, I really was not expecting much from FFIX. Fortunately, I was very wrong. Final Fantasy IX is probably one of the best Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior-style RPG games in a long time, if not ever. As a result, this is one of those games that I don't see myself putting down for some time to come, even after spending countless hours writing this guide. However, while I could fawn all over the game for quite some time, I shall spare you that for now.

Hi,

This was by far the best conference I know of and the quality is right on par. I am looking forward to 2008"s conferences. Happy New Year.

Hello,

I wonder if these technologies can be applied to other areas like military helicopter maps, and other military areas.

Super cool technologies!

Found this really vinyl sticker website. You can upload your logo or photograph, add text and graphics, then they can make it into a sign or sticker. It's so fun and easy to use too. Best part is they ship all orders the very next day! How cool is that? Visit them today and check them out!

I haven't heard much about the photosynth software recently. The video is from nearly a year ago. Does anyone know how the development is going?

It will be so interesting on how people will react to this creation...I know I will be one who will want to buy it!

It is truly amazing on how you can take an ordinary picture and transform it to a 3D picture...JUST IMAGINATIVE and PHENOMENAL!

This will fly off the shelfs.

What if:

Microsoft joined their efforts with Google and combined PhotoSynth with Panoramio? This would really make an astonishing application.

I think the combination of the two technologies would mean the start of a whole new era in which people will start to experience the world in a whole new manner:

Public user content of the world available through Panoramio can be used to recreate it in a digital-online setting. This would mean a way to automatically digitizing all wonders of the world (being buildings, panorama) in full picture glory. It also means other users are given the change to experience such a location in three dimensions without ever going there.

Geez, i really hope to visit some more wonders of the world this way... Ofcourse after being there in person

Greetings.

Another question:

Is it possible to abstract 3d model information from the mesh and image information?
In my opinion PhotoSynth can be seen as a way to archive and navigate image collections, but digitizing 3D environments out of the gathered data would create a truely astonishing way to navigate our world.

Greetings,

Peter Vrenken
