If you’re as mesmerized by exploring some of the Photosynth collections as we are, you might be interested to know that there’s a hidden autoplay function in Photosynth.  Launch any collection, then press the “1” key. Every 7 seconds Photosynth will advance to the next image in a tour that will take you through every photo in the set. Clicking anywhere interrupts the tour, but you can use your mouse wheel to zoom while the tour is going on if you like. You can almost run it as a screensaver... just maximize IE using F11 and minimize the sidebar tab and the application will fill your screen.

There’s even a back door to control the transition time. If you add an “&autoPlayInterval=5000”  argument to the end of your URL, you get a slide show that transitions every 5000 milliseconds, or 5 seconds. (The minimal legal value for this parameter is 3000). Here’s a sample URL: http://labs.live.com/photosynth/view.html?collection=FaiginGallery/index1.sxs&autoPlayInterval=5000

Be careful – watching Photosynth do its thing can seriously impact your productivity.

Oh this is so nice! I built a quick VB Screen saver that calls up Photosynth (in IE, maximized) with the delay time I like (7 seconds) and auto-presses the "1" key (couldn't you assume based on the fact I pass an advance time on the URL that I want an automated view?) and it works nicely.

Photosynth is now my screensaver, and yes it has totally FUBARED my productivity.

Tomorrow, if time allows, I will change the VB code to cycle through collections... right now it is static.

Love this toy. Can't wait to see it do more.

Nice Feature ;-)

And you are very right: Watching Photosynth does seriously impact my productivity.

Rob, is it *really* your screensaver; as in, is there some way to make it kick in after you've been idle for a few minutes? Because that indeed would be the coolest screensaver ever. :)
11/15/2006 5:27:06 PM UTC
Rob - yes, it's a true screensaver - compiled in VB 6 as a screensaver, so it shows up in the Windows system just like any other screen saver.

Basically all it does is launch IE with the correct URL, sets IE to full-screen and then passes the browser window the "1" to get the show moving.

It doesn't work with multiple monitors, and I can't figure out how to close the collections sidebar programatically. Fortunately it remembers if I had the sidebar open the last time I visited - if it was closed last time, it'll launch with the sidebar closed.

Rob, could you post it somewhere? That is awesome! Kill my productivity, please! :)

I'm the PM for Photosynth and wanted to help you out with your screensaver(which by the way sounds awesome!).

If you want it to open with the sidebar closed, add the following parameter to your url: &sb=closed

You're right in noticing that we set a cookie for the sidebar status so if if you close it, we remember that the next time you launch - using the url parameter you can force it, though.

And another bit of fun.... The URL argument autoPlayRandom=1 changes the behavior so that the photos play in random order. The "long-distance transitions" that this results in are either fun or nauseating, depending on your tolerance for roller coasters!

Wow, now you are just gonna make me set my screensaver waiting time to 1 minute just to watch this. It's that addictive. Please keep us folks at tech hype updated, we have just done abit of feature on the three upcoming technologies from the Live Lab, plus we have quite abit of, erm, fun suggestions for this new technology.

Perhaps you guys could work this seadragon to allow me to create collections using a mobile phone, and then view it with a phone?
