Over the last few months we’ve been gathering feedback both internally and from our partners on the authoring experience for Photosynth. The experiments have yielded some fantastic results that we anticipate sharing on the site in the weeks and months ahead. Today we’d like to share one such example from our friends at MSN Korea. One brisk Seoul winter month, over 4,000 photos were submitted by local Koreans to help construct this synth of Gyeongbok Palace, one of South Korea's finest national treasures. Originally built in 1394, it is the largest palace of the Joseon Dynasty. At its height in the mid 1800's, it covered 330 buildings and over 4 million square feet as the grand home for the royal family. This is the first synth we’ve shown that contains a mix of professional photography and candid photos from other people using their own cameras.

Enjoy exploring the Palace and check back soon for even more Photosynth goodness.

Did the mouse-wheel control exist before? I have just discovered its use and it makes it all so nicely intuitive! I can't wait for the beta and experiment with making Synth's. Keep up the good work !

We've always had the mouse wheel zooming & panning. Thanks for appreciating it!

AMAZING. The technology and the photos are amazing. The ability to learn and discover is now almost limitless!!

Thank you very much for adding another gallery - the experience is mindblasting.

I think it's a rather nice idea that you chose Gyeongbok Palace - a place most people (including me) have not seen before.

Do you see a difference between photos taken by professionals and amateurs? How important is resolution?

Hi! Where can I get media footage / an interview with someone at photosynth? thanks Deni
6/1/2007 8:20:02 AM UTC

Impressive, I can't wait to see the future of Photosynth (a collaboration with Jeff Han sounds like a good idea).

When will we see Videosynth :)?

Hey Jérôme, wait till you figure out the FLYING controls! Now that is fun!

HEY LIVE LABS!

Come on! When can we build some collections? You could blow Gogle "Streetview" out of the water right now with a well timed release.

PLEASE, I'm begging ya, it's been almost a year! Send out the beta so we can synth out own collections.

Off to check out the "local Koreans".... no doubt, it will be great...

As a Microsoft developer, I'm confused as to why all these projects (this and Live Local's 3D Maps for example) are ActiveX... What happened to ClickOnce, WPF and XBAP?

It seems to be alot of do what I say, not what I do...

In any case, VERY impressive application, I can't wait to make my own!
6/4/2007 8:03:00 PM UTC
Thanks for all the praise. It's nice to know we're not the only ones who think this little gadget is pretty cool. :) We are working on something new; we just can't talk about it right now.

to answer some of the questions above - Tim, resolution isn't important other than that it makes the viewing experience much better. The only difference between amateur and professional photos for us is the quality - they all synth equally well.

Deni, if you look at the video section there's some excellent footage.

Amazing! As a college student, this has to be the best thing to happen to anthropology. You can do a complete study of a civilization's architectural structure in a matter of minutes that would have taken you days to search over the internet and hours of scanning and mashing in a library. If I could ever do one myself, I would go to Machu Picchu, Peru. That place is amazing and huge. I hope to one day travel there and make a Photosynth myself!

It looks great. I do wonder if there is the possibility to get a view from inside. Also, perhaps it is possible to create an interactive concept that allows the user to not only change position of the view, but to go inside and go up a flight of stairs, or into an elevator. Could it be possible to create a representation of the world inside and out? An example could be a model that allows someone to walk around and inside the grand canyon and enjoy all of its views without having to physically go there.

Hey guys. You've probably already thought of this, but if not, it'd be great if there was integration between Photosynth and Virtual Earth such that the overhead and Bird's Eye imagery from VE could be used in the synth to provide more high-quality images to fill out the overhead views of locations in Photosynth collections. Maybe make this optional so you can still get an unobstructed point cloud view.

Conversely, it'd also be great to offer a portal within VE that leads to Photosynth (e.g., a link in VE offering users to experience a particular location in Photosynth) if that location is included in a Phososynth gallery. Optionally, at some point, the engines could be integrated such that PS is just a viewing mode within VE.

Interesting, but IMHO not nearly as spacially immersive as a spherical panorama, especially ones taken from birds-eye or elevated vantage points.

The browsing speed seems to be quite fast, but I find transistions between adjacent "keyhole" images to be comparatively discontinuous, abrupt, or somewhat disjointed. I find panning or tilting the view in a seamless spherical panorama forms a much stronger spatial image of the subject space in far less time than does Photosynth.

I believe a spherical panorama offers the viewer a stationary vantage point from which to develop a spatial map far more effectively and rapidly than does Photosynth.

The photo collections in PS may be shot from a large number of vantage points, which when "panned", seems to present a quickly changing sequence of views which can seem disorienting because there may be abrupt transitions between images as the subject distance, and camera view pitches, and rolls dramatically, making it comparatively difficult to form a spatial map. In cinematic parlance, these are not dolly, or steadicam moves.

PS seems conceptually interesting, but my first impression is that spatial immersion is not its forte. The Piazza collections seem more spatially immersive than does the Grassi Lake one is. I speculate that edge detection of man-made architectural features, and a higher density of photos in the Piazza collections helps build a more recognizable point cloud and immersive environment than the mountain landscape of the Grassi Lake one which features irregular mountain contours, and natural and organic shapes devoid of hard edges of a man-made space.

You need to include the date and time for the pictures. most picture are taken by digital cameras, so that should be no problem.

that way you could find pictures, not only of a specific location, but for a specific date and time, like the time that you happend to be there yourself. this way you might even find other peoples pictures of yourself, and pictures just like your own, same time and date, but at different angles.

you seriously need to hide the email adresses. and I got the message that I can't put urls or bad words in my message. I didn't put any bad words, and didn't put any urls. I had no idea what words might be the reason, so I had to just rewrite it completely. please fix it

Love Photosynth but i want a version i can use with my vast photolibrary, places like Machu Picchu, Krakow city (the entire city centre prity much covered), Paris, Prague, Scotland etc etc

A Beta version NO Matter how slow would be great, as long as it runs on any version of Win32 and is distributed i could easily have it run on some old computers or better still if it were to run on a unix platform then it could run on my sparc and sgi's or my alpha, pda etc etc etc

the technology needs to be released now!

Seems when the bookmarks column in Firefox 2.0.0.6 is minimized, the photos in collection are not visible. The black screen and white dots move as they should, but the photos and the "stills" at the bottom of the screen are no longer shown.

In this collection of photos, there is one shot where someone left a hammer on the roof in one of the tiles. It's on the right hand side of the lower roof. about the fourth row over.

Has anyone else ever seen this infamous hammer? A friend of mine pointed it out to me.

Amazing. I was really impressed about the C Dragon presentation as well. I remember when I took couple of pictures in my first 2megapixel digital camera and used a panorama software to stitch them together. Now the technology has advanced so much. Can't wait for Photosynth. come out of beta..
