It's been great for us to watch your comments, suggestion and ideas around Photosynth. As you know, this is a long term project and the team continues to make progress on a daily basis to add more functionality to the underlying technology. After we released the technology preview in November we saw a number of requests for a version that would work in Firefox. Live Labs is committed to making our technologies available to the widest possible audience, and today we're happy to announce the availability of the Photosynth Firefox plugin. We know that you are waiting for the day when you will be able to create your own collections, and that will happen, but in the meantime look for more beautiful new examples of Photosynth in action over the coming months.

Great to see this post re-appeard ;)

Awesome work!

Do you use the NS4 plugin API? If yes, then why no Opera support? Or is there, but untested?

1/25/2007 10:37:36 AM UTC
Wow, I really appreciate it that you guys at Microsoft write a plugin for FF. Thanks a lot!
1/26/2007 6:58:08 PM UTC
This is a really cool app...! I am looking forward to being able to use it with my own work. Are you going to allow some beta testing by potential end users?

+1 Just the same question.

Hi, I've been trying to convert a 50-image 360 degree view of an object into a 3D model, but with very limited success. Pictomod3D got quite close. Your program looks as if it would do exactly what I need to do, but will it be possible to use it to output the point cloud, or standard CAD format like dxf, stl, obj, etc?

Thanks!
1/29/2007 7:01:23 PM UTC
i think you guys did great work with photosynth but i also have some suggestions to you:
1. it would be much easier to navigate if you have a compact tool - as it is used in "google earth" for example...
2. i know that this now is the hard part but i think it would be nice, if the user can switch between two modes, one shows the area as reconstructed from the photos and gives the user an impression of the "place" and the possibility to explore the area. The other one is as it is available in the test version with the pictures and the position of the photographer, i don't know it's like a gallery mode...
stay tuned,
yours

For a living I survey historic buildings and industrial sites using photogrammetry. Currently this process involves many painful hours/days of manual mark-up and cross-referencing of points/features across photos. The software stemming from your system may well make my job a lot easier and productive.
Obviously you are only at the tip of the iceberg, in terms of potential adaptations of this system to the film industry, industrial measurement, architectural documentation ...........
Looking forward to submitting my own photos.

I'm really looking forward to this app when it gets released, and I think two things would massively help it's uptake and usability:

a) the ability to tag photos pre-computation with a location tag (either from a town/area point of view or from a more personal "Dave's flat" kind of thing) so that the system knows only to compare like-with-like (and doesn't waste time trying to compare a shot of your cat on the sofa with the Tower of London)

b) a time-based slider control. If a person lives in a town and has many photos with that area as the backdrop, they could specify to display photos over a certain date or time-range, or even a season (say, all photos of the town in the 1990's or in winter). This information would be easy to get as all digital cameras I'm aware of date-tag their photos as a matter of course.

Still looking forward to seeing my flat in little 3D dots. Roll on a user-testable beta version!

A couple quick responses to some of the above comments:

Opera support: We are using the Gecko plugin API, so Photosynth seems to basically work in Opera (though it's untested), but we ran aground with the installation procedure, which appears to be different for Opera. For this reason, we've disabled it entirely for Opera. We don't have plans at the moment to revisit the Opera installation, but you never know.

Uploading you own images: We are working on it, but have no release date scheduled yet. We'll post here when there's something to play with.

3D model vs. point cloud: We cannot yet extrapolate from the point cloud to determine the object surfaces, but it's certainly an area we're interested in exploring.

It's exciting to see all the great ideas here! The adventure has just begun...

As soon as i saw this program i immediately thought of the immense possiblities with 3d models/point cloud data. It would be interesting if the program could generate surfaces and use the camera mapping technique to map all the photos to the 3d model. Would it be difficult to have an export capability? Maybe just tabular x,y,z coordinates. I have a program here that deals with point cloud data and it would be interesting to see what it would come up with from what Photosynth has generated.

Great job by the way....very very promising!!!

+1 on waiting for PhotoSynth being released to the public! I have thousands of 8 MB images, ready for the taking! :)
2/28/2007 9:30:00 PM UTC
Wow. Just, wow. When i first heard about this, i never imagined it would actually be so easy to use and absolutely mind blowing in its execution. I cant say enough good things about this, and have been showing it to everyone i know. I simply cannot wait until the day comes when we can make our own collections - This has me as excited as the promise of VR way back in the late 80s... Truly amazing, with even more amazing potential. Please keep up the good work and *hurry* !!!

Since this plugin only runs in Windows, why bother?

(From the plugin page)

"Windows XP SP2 and Vista Only
The Photosynth technology preview runs only on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista."

The draw for FF is that it's cross platform. That would mean not just two versions of Windows.
3/1/2007 6:25:37 PM UTC
Since you say that the plugin shoud work in Opera, I'd say it wouldn't be so hard to sacrifice a few hours of work to make it work in Opera. Maybe you could release the plugin code as open source and then somebody will make it work in whatever browser for free?

I cannot understand why this extraordinary software uses DirectX, and works only in Windows operating systems. It is Microsoft, but still.
3/7/2007 11:35:34 PM UTC
I created a photo set and uploaded it to my website, I hope one day the photosynth crawler will find it.

Any chance of getting this to run in something other than Windows? My primary development machine is Linux. Could the backend-side of this FF plugin work though Wine somehow? I'd love to use it in Linux. I do have a Windows laptop that I've tried it out on and it's pretty cool. Thanks for making a FF plugin, guys!
3/15/2007 3:59:48 AM UTC

3/23/2007 7:20:07 AM UTC
I hope someday you'll a support for 3D Connexion SpaceNavigator in Photosynth.

I'd be interested to have even just a pointcloud extracted (xml-file with just coordinates and colors) - no surfaces.

Very impressive that you produced a FF plugin. As to those who say the *only* reason to use FireFox is for cross-platform, I say "no way, dude!" :-)

I'm definitely looking forward to generating a collection with my own photos!

Are you on Vista or XP? We don't yet have a standard uninstallation system, but I can give you instructions based on your OS.

Doesn't look like the FF plugin is around any more... When I go to the page that supposedly has it, it's no where to be found. Hopefully it gets put back up, the technology looks awesome!
6/7/2007 2:12:23 PM UTC
Hi,

I installed Photosynth FF plugin, but it never works on my system (FF 2.0.4 + XP Pro 32 SP2). Error message is: "We were not able to load a collection and we are not sure why"!!!! Mwouah ha ha ha! LoL, one of the best error MS-MSG...

Now I'd like to uninstall Photosynth... OK. No uninstallation, not "pluged" as an extension or module of FF, so no uninstallation.

I removed nslphotosynth.dll, nppsynth.dll in FF subdirs; search for psynth and photosynth on the whole system, found them also in System dir (why there for a browser extension???), and removed them.

Is there some more elsewhere?

Thanx for any ping back.

Well, so here I am in FireFox and I go to
install the plugIn and...

the install page (link to the liveLabs page removed to see
if the blog filter will now accept this post - third try)

reports:

Internet Explorer 6 and 7 Only

This version of the Photosynth technology preview runs only on Internet Explorer 6 and 7. The Photosynth team is very interested in making the technology available outside of IE, so stay tuned for updates on this issue on the Photosynth blog. You can also subscribe to the blog's RSS feed.

If you feel you've reached this message in error, you can try anyway.

I *AM* running FF but dunno what's up?

It's a pity that MS bought the company rather than google:
then we'd see SeaDragon and PhotoSynth swimming in the open
waters of the world rather than the Windows aquarium... Sigh.

Awesome technology though!

Postscript:
So I click to "save comment" here and get this error message:
"Inappropriate words and external site links are not allowed."

Is my mild critique composed of "Inappropriate words" or my
including the livelabs link an "external site"?

In The Lord of the Rings OnlineTM: Shadows of AngmarTM (LOTRO), players can customize certain elements of the game's user interface (UI), also known as "skinning." While we don't allow you to do a full-scale UI replacement, we do give you the ability to replace selected visual elements of the UI. (A full list of these elements and their sizes is provided at the end of this overview.)

This is an updated (and prettied up) version of the information that had originally been posted in their Beta forums which we had copied to our Developer Discussions - Tutorials & Other Helpful Information forum. It is a combination of the Skinning the LOTRO UI and Art Assets posts.
