What is Deepfish?

Deepfish is a mobile browsing Technology Preview from Microsoft Live Labs. Deepfish displays content in a view that is closer to the desktop experience. The zoom-able interface and cue map allow you to quickly access the information you care about over the web without ever losing track of where you are.

How do I install the Deepfish client on my Smartphone/Pocket PC?

  • Download the Deepfish installer. When prompted save the installer to your desktop.
  • Connect your device to your desktop with *ActiveSync installed.(Windows Vista users click here for instructions)
  • Run the Deepfish installer and complete the installation.
  • Launch Deepfish by clicking the Deepfish icon from the Programs directory of your device.

*ActiveSync - if you don't have ActiveSync installed, download it from Microsoft site.

How do I launch the Deepfish client in my device?

  • Launch by clicking the Deepfish icon from the programs directory of your device (or)
  • From your device 'Program Files' > Deepfish > launch the Deepfish.exe

How do I navigate to an URL?

  • Launch the application
  • NAVIGATE, clicking HOME will take you to www.msn.com
  • NAVIGATE > ADDRESS BAR                                                                                                                                        
    • Type a URL, e.g.labs.live.com
    • Click 'OK' to navigate to the URL (Note: Pocket PC users: pressing ENTER will not navigate to URL)

What are the menu options available in Deepfish?

  • NAVIGATE > REFRESH, will fetch the most recent page from the web site.
  • NAVIGATE > FAVORITES, will list favorites that you added.
  • MENU > ADD TO FAVORITE, will add URL that you are currently browsing to your favorites.
  • MENU > REMOVE FROM FAVORITES, will remove URL that you are currently browsing from your favorites.
  • MENU > CLEAR CACHE, will clear the local cache.
  • MENU > CUE MAP, when turned on, will display a miniature version of the entire web page.
  • MENU > ACTIVATE, will display and allow the user to edit the Activation ID that is used to authenticate the user.
  • MENU > DIAGNOSIS, will provide detailed trace information for identifying source of the connectivity issues.
  • MENU > ABOUT, will display the version and copyright information of the Deepfish application.
  • MENU > EXIT, to shutdown the application. Using the windows CLOSE, will not terminate the application.

How do I Zoom-In and Zoom-Out?

  • ZOOM-IN                                                                                                                                        
    • Press the joystick to enable the grey view port; notice that the menu changes to Zoom-in and Zoom-out.
    • Press the joystick or press the enter button (with view port enabled) to zoom into the area of focus.
    • You can now navigate (Left, Right, Up and Down) the web page using the joystick or directional keypad
  • ZOOM-OUT                                                                                                                                        
    • From zoomed-in mode, hold the joystick or directional keypad until the border changes from green to gray
    • Release the joystick to zoom-out
    • Press and hold again to hide gray view port
    • If the above approach does not work, press the Back/Del key

  • Note: In zoomed-in mode a CUE-MAP is shown on the upper right corner; CUE-MAP shows your current zoomed-in location on the webpage. You can turn this feature ON or OFF via the menu options.

How do I click on HyperLink?

  • Once Zoomed–in, Press the joystick, to snap to the clickable elements on the web page.
  • Navigate the Left, Right, Up or Down using the joystick to move between elements.
  • Press the joystick to navigate to the link.

How do I input on Form elements and post it to the web?

  • Once Zoomed–in, Press the joystick, to snap to the clickable elements on the web page.
  • Navigate the Left, Right, Up or Down using the joystick to move between elements.
  • Once on Form element, press the joystick which brings up an input box.
  • Type in the content and press Ok.
  • Navigate the Left, Right, Up or Down using the joystick to move to the associated button.
  • Press the joystick.

How do I go back to previous page?

You can press and hold the joystick, or press the Back/Del button. The Back button is available only on Smart Phone. In Pocket PC you can press and hold the joystick until the border color changes from green to gray. Release the joystick to go back to the previous screen.

I am not able to view some dynamic websites through Deepfish, Why?

The current CTP version does not support web sites with AJAX, animation, javascript, cookies and ActiveX controls.

How do I uninstall the application from the device?

When you run desktop installer for Deepfish, it will copy over the files to your desktop then use ActiveSync to deploy it onto your device. When you uninstall from your desktop you are only uninstalling the files from desktop. If you want to uninstall from device, go to active sync and select add/remove program to uninstall it.
Note: For upgrade reasons, this uninstall does not clear up the local cache of the device.

How do I fully clean up the device after uninstall?

DeepFish uses your local disk as much as possible to store cache files to improve the performance. After uninstall if you wish to reclaim the spaces allocated for DeepFish you may go to File Explorer and manually delete the \My Documents\DeepFish folder.
